5 Best Office Plants for Employee Wellbeing

Placing indoor office plants where you work can help soften the utilitarian look of your office and bring a peaceful touch of the outside world to your daily routine. But plants for the office aren’t just for looks; they can also help buffer noises, increase employee productivity and even reduce job stress.

Another health benefit of indoor office plants may surprise you — some plants can actually remove harmful chemicals from the air, improving indoor air quality.

Unhealthy Office Air

You don’t have to work in a chemical factory to be exposed to harmful chemicals. In fact, indoor air pollution may be more than 100 times worse than the air outside, according to a World Health Organization study.

In an office environment, photocopiers, printers, plastics, solvents and even carpeting contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as toluene, benzene and formaldehyde. “Off-gassing” is the process by which these chemicals are released into the air. When you breathe this contaminated air, you may experience numerous symptoms, including headaches, dizziness and nausea.

Best Plants for the Office for Employee Wellbeing

The best plants for the office for cleaning the air in your office are called the “five super ornamentals” by the University of Georgia. Although other plants also have the ability to remove harmful chemicals from the air, research showed these five plants produced superior results with the highest rates of contaminant removal:

  1. Purple waffle plant (Hemigraphis alternata)

Plant Maintenance Tips

  • Plant an upright plant, such as the asparagus plant, in the center of a pot with a trailing plant, such as English ivy, around the edges of the pot.
  • Combine several plants that have different colors, textures and sizes in a single pot.
  • For maximum effectiveness, place at least two 10- to 12-inch potted plants per 100 square feet of your office.
  • Don’t overwater indoor office plants, because that could cause a secondary health problem — mold.

Surround yourself by nature’s air purifier — green office plants — and breathe healthier while you’re at work. Call the professionals at Plant Interscapes with any questions you have about plants for your office.

If you are looking for a way to increase productivity and reduce stress in your office, plants offer an inexpensive and attractive solution. There are actually many benefits of office plants.

Dr. Leonard Perry, Extension Professor of The University of Vermont, published an article titled, “Plants At Work, Indoors.” In his article, he cites some interesting studies and the results on the benefits of office plants.

  • Plants placed in strategic areas in your office reduce stress by 12%, and plants have a positive effect on an employee’s disposition.
  • Absence dropped by 14% when an attractive display of greenery was placed in the work environment.
  • Offices with plants have 60% less mold than offices without plants.

Other benefits of office plants include their ability to absorb toxins released into the air by carpets and other office building offenders, and plants reduce blood pressure too.

Professor Perry went on to state that researchers from Berkeley found office air quality was the reason for 40% of all sick days. Increasing air quality is one of the benefits of office plants, and just 15 to 20 plants clean up air in a 1,500 square foot area.

Additional benefits of office plants are noise reduction, while raising perception, and when plants are placed in work areas to define space employees are happier and healthier.

According to Plantscape, employees feel more secure when plants are in the office. When the foliage is placed in the an employee’s line of sight, productivity increased and employees were more responsive. Creativity and innovation is increased when employees were exposed to greenery. Plantscape goes on to report that plants reduce fatigue, headache, sore throats and coughs by significant amounts.

Employees feel good when foliage is abundant and placed in strategic areas in the office environment. Plants provide a welcoming ambiance and promote feelings of security and well being. Benefits of LED Lighting Part II

benefits of led lighting - holiday decorating ideas

In an effort to help office managers, property managers, and hotel managers prepare for the holidays, we are doing a series on the benefits of LED lighting. Download this free LED Christmas Lights whitepaper, which features the entire series.

Last time, we briefly touched on the benefits of LED lighting for the holidays and how LED lights actually do save you money.

Today, let’s dive in a little deeper into the benefits, so you can really understand why making the investment is so worth it.

Benefits of LED lighting

Energy Consumption

First and foremost, LED bulbs are 90% more efficient and demand 10% of the energy required by incandes- cent bulbs.

Light Emitting Diodes are resistors of electrical current with the byproduct being visible light.

LED’s are far more efficient in their conversion of electricity to visible light because little to no energy is lost in the form of heat.

Because LED bulbs generate little heat in their resistance of electricity, very little power is lost with a much higher percentage going directly into generating light and that is what significantly reduces their electricity demands equating to the low cost of operation.

Longevity & Durability

The longevity of LED light sets come in the form of two factors — their astonishingly long lamp life rating and the inherent durability of how LED light bulbs are constructed.

Perhaps an even greater advantage for cost savings with LED’s beyond their incredible energy efficiency is the length of their lamp life rating or lifespan coupled with the durability their components.

In other words, they don’t burn out and they just don’t break.

Incandescent light bulbs use a fragile filament that heats up and glows to produce light while LED’s use a diode to convert electricity into visible light—hence the name, Light Emitting Diode.

LED’s are solid-state devices encased in plastic with no delicate components they are highly resistant to dam- age caused by vibration which is a leading cause of early bulb failure in incandescent lamps. Because LED bulbs are constructed with epoxy lenses and not glass they are immensely more rigid than incandescent bulbs. Most LED bulb housings are molded directly to the wire strands and are impervious to moisture and resistant to extreme temperatures. They last longer and resist breakage so you will not need to replace them with near the frequency you would of incandescent sets.

Benefits of Hotel Lobby Plants

sa grand hyatt 1 r

Whether for business or pleasure, when travelers arrive at your hotel, you want them to feel calm, relaxed, and welcome. Your staff works hard to give each guest the best experience, but did you know that live plants can also work towards providing exceptional service?

Here’s a look at three benefits of hotel lobby plants.

1. Cleaner Air

A lobby that is flush with fresh, live plants is a sharp contrast to travel-weary guests who have made their way through dirty airports, crowded trains, and harsh city conditions. One of the best benefits of hotel lobby plants is their ability to strip toxins from the air and replace them with oxygen and a fresh scent. Stepping inside your hotel will be a breath of fresh air and your guests will instantly relax and begin to feel at home.

2. Psychological Lift

Traveling can be a stressful activity, even if you’re on vacation or revisiting a favorite destination. A study from the Washington State University found that plants can directly reduce stress levels when used indoors. Other psychological lifts your guests will enjoy are an improved mood and sense of well-being and increased feelings of calm, relaxation, and optimism.

3. Clearer Thinking

Your business travelers may be preoccupied with their work instead of thinking about the benefits of hotel lobby plants, but you can secretly help them achieve better success. Indoor plants and flowers have been shown to improve idea generation, improve memory retention, and boost productivity. They might not know why everything seems to work better when they stay with you, but business travelers will keep coming back to enjoy their professional success.

Happy Guests

The goal of every hotel is to make their guests happy. When you have the right environment combined with excellent staff, you can be sure that your guests will feel great when they choose your accommodations. Live plants will not only make your lobby look inviting and beautiful, but they will also help your guests feel better and work harder so they keep coming back.
